Di and John Harris Memorial Education Fund
Di Harris was a respected and much-loved South Australian with a passion for education and a strong commitment to social justice. She had just started to become interested in the work of AFFLIP when in March 2014 she was diagnosed with a terminal illness and tragically died just six months later. AFFLIP was approached by the Harris family with an offer to contribute money towards a project which would recognise the life of Di Harris and so Learning Through the Outdoor Environment (OLEP) Project began.
John Harris (Di’s husband) was appointed to the AFFLIP board in 2015 and was committed to supporting the OLEP Project being undertaken at A. Bonifacio Elementary School under the leadership of Ronald Mangmang. John was to be a member of the annual AFFLIP delegation to Davao City in February 2017 to see first hand the finished project and the students enjoying the structures, but also formally open the area.
John tragically died in November 2016 before he was able to go on the trip.
His loss is deeply felt by AFFLIP, but we are at least comforted by the fact that John knew that the project had come to fruition, and that he had enjoyed the pictures sent back from Bonifacio ES of the students using the new areas.
Following John’s death, the Board decided to rename the fund associated with OLEP as the Di and John Harris Memorial Education Fund.
